Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love, is known for its rich history, vibrant restaurant scene, and abundance of walkability. While South Jersey, just across the bridge, offers a compelling alternative if you're looking for a change of pace. If you’ve been considering moving to South Jersey, here’s some things you should know:
1️⃣ Spacious Living
One of the most significant advantages of relocating to South Jersey is the ample space it provides. South Jersey boasts a median lot size of 10,000sqft. Compare this to Philadelphia’s meagre 1,000sqft, and you’ll realize why so many people have fled the city to move to the ‘burbs.
This substantial increase in space opens up a world of possibilities for homeowners, from expansive backyards, to gardens, to home additions, to off-street parking, to creating garage workshops for working on cars, and multiple recreational areas. And with so many people now working remotely, this additional space has become more important than ever to host home offices.
2️⃣ Tolls
If you want to live in South Jersey but work in Philadelphia, it’ll be important to budget for the toll as you cross the bridge every day. Whether it’s the Walt Whitman, Benjamin Franklin or Betsy Ross, these South Jersey ↔️ Philadelphia crossings will charge you about $5 per journey. That’s about $80-$120 a month if you head over the river every weekday for work.
3️⃣ Taxes
Naturally, many Philadelphians are concerned with the sheer increase in property taxes if they move from the city out to the Jersey suburbs. But what do you get in exchange for these taxes?
The main attraction, particularly for parents, is the school districts. Here in South Jersey we have some of the highest-rated schools in the country, according to Niche.com.
But just how much will these taxes set you back? If you’re looking to move to towns like Haddonfield, Haddon Township, and Collingswood, you can expect to pay about $8,000 to $16,000 for a medium-sized house. That’s between $700 and $1,300 a month just in taxes.
The good news is that South Jersey has many lower-taxed towns that our clients absolutely love. Consider towns like Runnemede, Pennsauken, Barrington and Somerdale, where you might find property taxes as low as $5,000.
